Hikitia!

Hikitia! is a mātauranga led, systems focused primary prevention initiative. We work to address the underlying causes of sexual and family violence using a systems change approach to prevention. This means working with a range of people and groups to make sure violence doesn’t happen in the first place.
Our mahi has three objectives. First is to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi and draw from the strength of te ao Māori. Our second objective is to strengthen the foundations of a world where violence doesn’t exist: by promoting mana-enhancement, wellbeing, healthy relationships, and eliminating the root causes of violence. Thirdly, we work using a systems change approach by influencing policies and decision makers.
More specifically, we are:
- Connecting communities and organisations to strengthen initiatives
- Piloting projects in areas not engaged in sexual violence primary prevention to support culture shift (e.g. schools, sports clubs and other community groups)
- Mobilising communities to get involved with systems change- voting, bill submissions etc.
- Reindigenising organisational practice through mātauranga
- Supporting initiatives that already exist
- Uplifting community voice
The ingoa of this kaupapa is Hikitia!, meaning to raise or uplift. We have the answers to sexual violence and domestic violence here in our communities – our mahi is simply to uplift them.
