Karakia whakamutunga | Whakamaua te Kōrero

Whakamaua te kōrero
Whakamaua te wānanga
Whakamaua ki a Ranginui e tū iho nei
Whakamaua ki a Papatūānuku e takoto ake nei
Whakatina ki te tumu o te māramatanga
Kia tina! Tina!
Hui ē, Tāiki ē!

Affirm these discussions
Affirm these learnings
Affirm them before Ranginui above
Affirm them before Papatūānuku below
Bind our understandings firm
Let us be one
We have united in conscious thoughts

The purpose of this karakia is to close or finish a space. The intention for karakia whakamutunga is to thank people for their mahi to achieve the discussed goals, close off a korero and to put forth hope for the future mahi to follow.
This karakia is not appropriate to open a space – it’s kupu speaks to ‘affirm these decisions, bind these understandings’, a direct link to the intention of holding on to shared knowledge and moving forward with that knowledge. You cannot ‘bind’ a conversation that hasn’t been had so it is important to use this karakia with clear intent that align with its values.
