Karakia | Tūtawa

Tūtawa mai i runga
Tūtawa mai i raro
Tūtawa mai i roto
Tūtawa mai i waho
Kia tau ai
Te mauri tū
Te mauri ora
Ki te katoa
Haumi e, hui e, Tāiki e!

Come forth from above,
Come forth from below,
Come forth from within,
and from the environment
Vitality and wellbeing
for all
Strengthened in unity.

Tūtawa was composed by Te Manahau Morrison of Ngāti Whakaue, a respected Māori language advocate, kapa haka expert, and educator. He was known for his tireless work in revitalising Te Reo Māori, particularly through performing arts and education. This karakia reflects his passion for grounding learners in both language and wairua.
The karakia calls for energy and spiritual guidance from all directions — above, below, within, and beyond — invoking te mauri tū and te mauri ora to be present among all. It sets the tone for collective focus, unity, and readiness.
This karakia is most appropriate at the beginning of hui, classrooms, kapa haka practices, wānanga, and formal gatherings, where spiritual intention and connection are key.
