Karakia | Whakataka te Hau

Whakataka te hau ki te uru
Whakataka te hau ki te tonga
Kia mākinakina ki uta
Kia mātaratara ki tai
E hī ake ana te atākura
He tio, he huka, he hau hū
Tīhei mauri ora!

Cease the winds from the west
Cease the winds from the south
Let the breeze blow over the land
Let the breeze blow over the ocean
Let the red-tipped dawn come with a sharpened air
A touch of frost, a promise of a glorious day
Behold, there is life!

This karakia is versatile, like its imagery grounded in calming a storm. Acknowledging the four winds and bringing a roopu (or oneself) into the present to focus on the mahi. This karakia is not explicitly used to open and close a space, it is more important that its intention and use align with its meaning. It is suitable to use this karakia to open a space, close off a challenging korero, or to recentre on the kaupapa.
